Information for Scouts and Leaders from outside the United States and Canada What: Michigan International Camporee 2004, the third Michigan International
Camporee to be hosted by Chief Okemos Council BSA, will be an 8 day camping
experience for Scouts, Venturers, and leaders from over 20 different countries,
held from August 1 - 8, 2004, at Northwoods Scout Reservation near West
Branch, Michigan.
Participants: Patrols of Scouts, 13 to 17 years old, either all boys or mixed boys and girls. (12 year olds can participate if a camporee adult leader certifies that they have the necessary maturity and camping skills.) Each campsite will contain Scouts from 2 or more different countries. All participating international Scouts must be part of official contingents, accompanied by adult leaders. At least one adult leader in each contingent must be 21 or older. Each contingent must be approved by their country's WOSM international commissioner. Northwoods is a NO SMOKING camp, and we expect all camporee participants, youth and adults, to be nonsmokers during the 8 days of the camporee. There are no alcoholic beverages permitted at Northwoods at any time. Program: Swimming, rowing, canoeing, fishing, tubing, archery, rifle and shotgun shooting, Scoutcraft, nature, activities related to Michigan history, and opportunities for Scouts and leaders from other countries to share their songs, games, and other Scouting activities. There will be no badge work. Home Hospitality: Home stays for international groups will be the week before the camporee in Lansing, Michigan, and nearby communities. Groups will be hosted for home stays by the same Michigan troop(s) they will camp with at the camporee. We expect the week’s activities to include sightseeing in Michigan and a day at Cedar Point amusement park near Sandusky, Ohio, which has more rides and more roller coasters than any other amusement park in the world. International groups should plan to arrive in Michigan during the weekend of July 23-25 for these home stays and to depart from Michigan after the camporee. Arrival and departure can be at the Detroit, Flint, or Lansing, Michigan, airport or by bus or train for those doing other North American sightseeing. International Participation: As of October 1, 2002, there are already groups of Scouts from Australia, Costa Rica, Denmark, Hungary, Ireland, Isle of Man, Jamaica, Jordan, Mexico, Netherlands Antilles, New Zealand, Slovakia, Switzerland, Trinidad & Tobago, Uganda, UK (England) and UK (Scotland) planning to participate. Fee: As before, we will invite one patrol of up to 8 Scouts, either all boys or mixed boys and girls, and 2 adult leaders from any country outside the US and Canada to participate with no camp fee. If there is room, a second patrol of up to 8 additional Scouts and 2 additional adult leaders will be able to participate at a fee of US $ per person. Youth participants must be at least 12 years old and not yet 18 years old on August 1, 2004. Adults in addition to the 2 per patrol who will serve as campsite leaders are welcome to apply to serve in camporee staff positions at a US $ per person staff fee. All participating international Scouts, leaders, and staff members will be expected to pay their own passport and visa cost, transportation cost to and from Michigan, some sightseeing expenses during the home stay week, and for items like souvenirs and snacks. Uniforming: the same as at a U.S. National Jamboree, with all
participants required to wear full official Scout uniforms of their countries
at ceremonies and other campwide activities
